Many fans of the classic Close to the Edge album from UK rock band, Yes, were earlier treated to an SACD of the much loved title via Audio Fidelity. Not long after that 2013 release, it was announced that on October 29, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree member and remix engineer extraordinaire) would deliver a newly remixed 5.1 surround version of the album along with a newly remixed stereo version, all from the original multi-track masters. But the upcoming set will provide so much more.
Panegyric Records has versions planned for both DVD-Audio and Blu-ray Audio, with the Blu-ray Audio set containing more extras. At the end of this article, there is a complete breakdown on what is contained in both versions of the new reissue. Both sets will contain a booklet with new liner notes, rare photos, and complete album info and credits. In addition, Roger Dean, the original artist of the album's artwork, will provide updated artwork. The DVD-Audio version is slated for a double digipak and safe-guarded by a protective slipcase, while the BD-Audio set will be in a mini-vinyl LP replica gatefold cardboard sleeve-styled carrier.
While the news that Close to the Edge will be available in the long-desired 5.1 surround format is quite exciting, it's also beautiful to know that there are instrumental versions of the songs, a remix and inclusion of “America”, and an early mix and assembly of “Close to the Edge." Note that the two formats will be different in some aspects. You can get all the info you need on the complete breakdown found below.
Another exciting note is that this reissue is the “first in a series," which means that Relayer, Fragile, Tales of Topographic Oceans, and Going for the One are likely to follow over the next few years.
