Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo has produced a feature-length documentary film about the life of the virtuosic bassist Jaco Pastorius, who died in 1987 at the age of 35. Sony Legacy has culled performances by Pastorius and other artists for JACO: Original Soundtrack, a single CD featuring 16 tracks and extensive liner notes by Trujillo.
The included Pastorius material spans 1976 to 1981, with tracks taken from both Pastorius' own solo albums plus recordings from his tenure with Weather Report. Four cuts come from the bassist's 1976 self-titled solo debut: "Okonkolé Y Trompa," "Portait of Tracy," "Continuum," and "Come On, Come Over."
The soundtrack digs deeper, however, including a live track by Joni Mitchell, "The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines," that features Pastorius on guitar (along with Pat Metheny). Ian Hunter's "All American Alien Boy," with Pastorius on bass, is here too. Pastorius' daughter Mary is present, with her own "Longing," recorded in 1996.
Perhaps most interesting are the three brand new recordings created specifically for the film soundtrack. Two are Pastorius covers: "Come On, Come Over" by Mass Mental (featuring Robert Trujillo, Armand Sabal-Lecco, Flea, Whit Crane, Benji Webbe, Stephen Perkins, and C-Minus) and "Continuum" as recorded by Rodrigo y Gabriel. There's also "Shine," a new track by Tech N9ne that includes a sample of Pastorius' recording of "Kuru."
JACO: Original Soundtrack is available now from Sony Legacy. Jaco: The Film is also available on Blu-ray and DVD from Iron Horse Entertainment.
