Five years after the previous entry in the series, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has recently issued Looney Tunes Spotlight Collection Volume 8. The two-disc DVD set is designed, as the previous seven Spotlight Collections were, as an introduction to the classic Looney Tunes shorts. Collected on the three hour-plus set are 30 animated shorts, including the celebrated, Oscar-nominated (Best Animated Short) Pigs in a Polka from 1943, which is a combined send-up of Disney’s Three Little Pigs and Fantasia.
The first disc contains 15 shorts centered on everyone’s favorite wise-cracking rabbit, Bugs Bunny. These range from the Tex Avery-directed 1941 cartoons Tortoise Beats Hare and The Heckling Hare to the 1955 Friz Freleng-directed Hyde and Hare. Though it doesn’t include Bugs’ 1940 debut (A Wild Hare) within the rather jumbled chronology, Volume 8 allows viewers the fun of seeing the classic character in a variety of settings throughout his golden years.
Just when you might find yourself a little Bugs-ed out, the second disc offers another 15 shorts that shine a light on the Merrie Melodies cast of supporting characters. The time period covered here is no less than 23 years, from 1938’s Now That Summer is Gone to 1961’s The Last Hungry Cat and another Oscar-nominee, The Pied Piper of Guadalupe. In between we spend time with Daffy Duck (The Wise Quacking Duck), Porky Pig (Claws for Alarm), Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner short Whoa, Be-Gone!, and the debut of Speedy Gonzales (Cat-Tails for Two).
These shorts were all previously available on DVD as part of the more comprehensive Looney Tunes Golden Collection volumes two through five. In other words, serious collectors will likely have these. But that doesn’t mean the Spotlight Collection isn’t a great primer for those looking to sample. As stated by Mary Ellen Thomas, Vice President of Family & Animation Marketing and Partner Brands, “The Spotlight Collection is an excellent way to introduce younger viewers to a great American classic that’s been loved and revered by generations.”
