The Jungle Book, the original 1967 Walt Disney animated feature, will hit Blu-ray for the first time ever with a brand new Diamond Edition on February 11, 2014. This Oscar-nominated (Best Song: “Bare Necessities”) classic will boast a new high definition video transfer, DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 soundtrack (to show off the songs by Richard and Robert Sherman), and all-new bonus features.
Supplementing the adventures of Mowgli the Man Cub (voiced by Bruce Reitherman), as he journeys through the jungle with Baloo the Bear (voiced by Phil Harris), are numerous newly-crafted bonus materials. These include a new introduction by Diane Disney Miller and Richard M. Sherman, an alternate ending, featurettes “@DisneyAnimation: Sparking Creativity” and “Music, Memories & Mowgli: A Conversation with Richard M. Sherman, Diane Disney Miller and Floyd Norman,” Disney Intermission, a “Bear-E-Oke” sing-along, and “I Wanna Be Like You: Hangin’ Out At Disney’s Animal Kingdom.”
Additionally, the bonus features originally found on the previous DVD edition of The Jungle Book will be ported over. The Diamond Edition will be available in two configurations. Both packages include two discs (one Blu-ray and one standard DVD), but you’ll have the option of choosing the set with or without a digital copy.
Fans of Disney animation will also want to mark their calendars for March 18, as that date will see the Blu-ray debut of the 2003 DisneyToon Studios production, The Jungle Book 2. This theatrical release was produced on a very modest budget of $20 million and ended up hauling in more than $135 million at the worldwide box office. This time around, former child star Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense) voiced Mowgli and John Goodman assumed the role of Baloo.
The newly remastered high definition presentation will feature a lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack. Bonus features (ported over from a previous DVD edition) include the featurette “The Legacy of The Jungle Book,” two deleted scenes, and a pair of music videos (for “Jungle Rhythm” and “W-I-L-D”).
The Jungle Book Diamond Edition Blu-ray is currently available for preorder. For more information, visit the official website.
